Genetic & Developmental Defects or Injuries
Summer Tanager
This neotropical bird spent the 2014-15 winter in Maryland staying at an apartment complex where residents fed the birds. He showed developmental defects in both feet with the right foot being more severe, yet he still seemed to manage well through life.
From this perspective the defects of both feet can be appreciated. The other two pictures below show greater detail.
In this picture he is balancing himself on his right foot stump while the left foot with its digits is clearly seen. It is possible that the left two digits are still fused.
The left foot shows blunt ends of the digits without nails. The right foot shows the initiation of forming three digits which never developed.
